11 weeks

Yay! It no longer resembles an ugly prune!

  • The fingers and toes have completely separated.
  • The taste buds are starting to develop.
  • Baby has tooth buds, the beginning of the complete set of 20 milk teeth.
  • Baby can swallow and stick out his or her tongue.
  • Whole body except tongue is sensitive to touch.
  • Cartilage now calcifying to become bone.
  • If it is a boy, the testicles are starting to produce the testosterone hormone.
The baby has an upper lip, toes and ears and twenty little teeth are now forming. The brain is growing rapidly and producing more than 250,000 nerve cells a minute. The heart is almost completely developed and very much resembles that of a newborn baby. An opening at the atrium of the heart and the presence of a bypass valve divert much of the blood away from the lungs, as the child's blood is oxygenated through the placenta.

The eyelids have fused shut and will not open again until around week 27. The wrists and ankles have formed and the fingers and toes are clearly visible. By this week of the pregnancy the placenta has developed enough to support most of the critical job of producing hormones.

No angle, no dangle

After further research, we think the doc's "prediction" is nothing more than a 50/50 guess. Boys and girls have a 'bump' at this point, so there is no real way to say it is a boy bump or a girl bump. If you are really interested, you can see what I mean here At our appointment there was no way to tell what the "angle of the dangle" was!

So we are not painting the nursery blue just yet!

Baby got to go to it's first Dave Matthews concert last night! It really liked it!

We also went to Babies R Us yesterday and it appears that we have our stroller and our crib picked out. My husband is now obsessed with consumer reports, so it took a great deal of research before we were able to choose one. I hope it doesn't take that long to choose everything else we will need. We won't be done in time, if that's the case!!!

10 weeks, 1 day

Best appointment yet! During today's ultrasound we were able to see the baby moving around all over the place and hiccup! "It" was very active today! So cute!! Doc says she thinks it's a boy. She saw what she thinks is a penis (but it could also be the umbilical cord). She has been doing this a long time though, so there may be one more Bergin man in the world soon!

This is where she thinks she sees a penis. See the sideways "W" looking shape on the right? Well the outside parts are legs and the little bump in the middle is what doc called the man parts!

30 weeks to go!!!

How far along? 10 weeks
Total weight gain: -5 pounds
Maternity clothes? worn twice, for comfort--not necessity
Sleep: interrupted by trips to the bathroom 2-3 times a night :(
Cravings? Right now, kung pao chicken from Peony's please
Aversions? More than I can count, oddly enough chicken is high on that list (I'm very conflicted)
Best moment this week: Hearing wonderful things about the hospital we will deliver at from someone who actually delivered there and getting a lead on a great pediatrician!
Movement: none yet
Gender: your guess is as good as mine
Labor Signs: None.
Belly Button in or out? In.
What I miss: pineapple champagne
What I am looking forward to: being able to tell EVERYONE!
Milestone: made it through the day without a nap! (although I'm quite ready to go to sleep right now. it's 7:00pm)
Next appointment: Tomorrow

10 weeks along...

Our baby's growth is fast and furious at 10 weeks pregnant. He or she is nearly an inch and a half long and the size of a prune, but not nearly as shriveled (even with all the time it spends in water). In fact, our baby is really taking a human shape now. Bones and cartilage are forming, and small indentations on the legs are developing into knees and ankles. The arms (complete with elbows) can flex already, but don't run to the store for a baseball bat just yet. Though your baby's arms are taking shape and getting stronger, each one is only about the size of this number 1.

The tooth bud fairy is making her appearance this week, heralding the arrival of your baby's little choppers, which are forming under the gums. (Those pearly whites won't break through the gums until baby is close to six months old). Other systems are go, too. Baby's stomach is producing digestive juices, the kidneys are producing larger quantities of urine, and, if baby is a boy, he's already producing testosterone (yikes!).

Baby Bergin--9 weeks along!

Our little baby is 9 weeks old today! We went to the doctor for another ultrasound and it is measuring exactly where it should be. We saw the very strong heartbeat and got to see the baby move for the first time! It was sleeping, so the doc had to wake it up by poking me in the belly. She said it's not a good sign that we have a day sleeper! Nonetheless, we got to see it wiggle it's little arms and legs! (I think it said, "Leave me alone, I'm sleeping!") This weeks picture isn't the best. The baby was facing us, so it just looks like a blob. The head is up on the right. Since we are making good progress, the doc didn't need to take blood this week, which was nice. I am still giving myself daily shots and hope to start weening myself off of them in about 3 weeks. Next appointment Sep 10.

9 weeks

* Baby has begun movement - While still too small to feel, our little one is wriggling, shifting, and dancing already!
* Most joints are formed now - and trust that your little one is practicing bending and flexing.
* Fetus will curve its fingers around an object placed in the palm of its hand - This is amazing to see! At only nine weeks, if you happen to have an ultrasound, you may observe your infant fascinated by everything he or she can lay their fingers on (mainly other fingers, toes, ears and nose!
* Fingerprints are already evident in the skin
* Average size this week -- length 0.9 inch, weight 0.07 ounce

Next doctor's appointment is tomorrow!!
